On the one hand there...As always, very insightful.
On the one hand there’s the harmonic analysis, horizontal thinking. Linking chords, cadences…
On the other there’s the melody and the tensions that are in the voicings or chord scales.
But, most importantly, you stress the idea of harmonic ambiguity and letting go of scalewise improvisation on these tunes.

Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Miles were already far beyond traditional jazz and had let go of the limitations of modes and cadences. Much as I have come to understand the structure, thanks to analyses like these (so wonderfully done), this music remains way beyond my capabilities. The genius of these musicians… blows me away.Dzjanghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02130478212736564952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5089926376300913992.post-56587396535763522862020-09-29T12:27:02.513-07:002020-09-29T12:27:02.513-07:00Thanks for this, Peter. Learn the melody, develop a solo, submit it both as recording and in writing. Challenging tune for me!Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03746013069128335340noreply@blogger.com
